Summary and explanation
Performing the antigen test, a swab is taken from the nasopharynx or pharynx. The samples are applied to a special plate together with saline. In the presence of a virus, a coloured stripe appears in the cartridge within 10 minutes, confirming the presence of the virus. If the test sample is free of SARS-CoV-2 virus, there is no discoloration in the test area and the test is negative.
The rapid antigen test detects the presence of viral proteins (antigens) in nasopharyngeal or pharyngeal samples, based on the fact that the antibodies in the cassette bind only to SARS-CoV-2 virus antigens, helping to determine whether or not a person is infected.
This test indicates the current active infection and is used to find out if a person is currently infected.
The main manifestations are fever, fatigue, dry cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, myalgia and diarrhoea.
The principle of performance
The COVID-19 antigen rapid test device detects COVID-19 antigens by visually interpreting the result in band colours. If the sample contains sufficient COVID-19 antigens, a coloured band forms in the respective test area of the membrane. The presence of a coloured band in the test area indicates a positive result for a particular viral antigen and its absence indicates a negative result. The appearance of a coloured band at the control region serves as a procedural control, indicating that the proper volume of specimen has been added and membrane wicking has occurred.
Sampling from the Nasopharynx
The method of performing a rapid antigen test is not complicated and it even equates partially to the complexity of performing a pregnancy test, however, taking a sample from the nasopharynx is a more complicated procedure, so the assistance of a medical professional is necessary to perform these tests. These tests are for professional use only.
Use the swabs provided in the kit to ensure that the test is performed properly. It is important to collect as much secretion from the nasopharynx as possible. Carefully insert the sterile swab into the nasopharynx by gently pushing the swab into the posterior nasopharynx. Rotate the swab several times and pull it out of the nasopharynx.
